In the late 1950 s, industrial robots were first put into use. Joseph F.Englberger used the inspiration of servo systems to develop an industrial robot, the "Unimet" (Unimate), with George DeVol (GeorgeDevol), which was first used in the production workshop of General Motors in 1961. The initial industrial robot structure is relatively simple, the completed function is to pick up car parts and placed on the conveyor belt, the other working environment and no interactive ability, is in accordance with the predetermined basic procedures to accurately complete the same repetitive action. Although the application of "Unimet" is a simple repetitive operation, it shows the bright future of industrial mechanization and also opens the prelude to the vigorous development of industrial robots. Since then, in the field of industrial production, many heavy, repetitive or meaningless process tasks can be completed by industrial robots instead of humans.
In the 1960 s, the development of industrial robots ushered in the dawn, and the simple functions of robots were further developed. The application of robot sensors has improved the operability of robots, including the tactile sensors used by Ernst; Tomovich and Boni used pressure sensors on the world's first "dexterous hand"; McCarthy improved the robot, adding visual sensing system, and helped MIT launch the world's first robot system with visual sensors and able to identify and locate building blocks. In addition, using sonar systems, photocell and other technologies, industrial robots can correct their accurate position through environmental recognition.
Since the mid-1960s, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the University of Edinburgh have successively established robotics laboratories. The rise of the United States to study the second generation of sensors, "feeling" robot, and to artificial intelligence.
In the 1970 s, with the development of computer and artificial intelligence technology, robots entered the era of practical use. For example, Hitachi introduced a robot with tactile and pressure sensors and 7-axis AC motor drive. The world's first small computer-controlled robot, driven by electro-hydraulic servo, can track moving objects for assembly and multi-function operations, and other robots suitable for assembly operations include SCARA planar articulated robot invented by Yamanashi University in Japan.
In the late 1970 s, the PUMA series of robots launched by Unimation Corporation of the United States were controlled by multi-joint, multi-CPU secondary computers, all-electric, with dedicated VAL language and vision and force sensors, which marked the full maturity of industrial robot technology. PUMA still works on the front line of the factory.
